Neil Gower – As Kingfishers Catch Fire
Friday 20th September 2019 – Elementum Gallery, Sherborne
We're delighted to welcome renowned artist and illustrator Neil Gower to the gallery. On the opening night of his exhibition, we’ll talk with Neil about how his work has evolved from a childhood obsession to gaining international acclaim. Neil will also discuss his process of distilling the written word into visual form, with particular focus on the literary ornithology As Kingfishers Catch Fire, his collaboration with author Alex Preston and on which the exhibition is based. Original commissioned works for authors such as Bill Bryson will also be on display as will Neil's notebooks and sketches.
Private view and drinks served from 6.30pm, event begins at 7pm
'A magical book: an inimitable fusion of ornithology, literary anthology and autobiography.' Tom Holland
‘Sublime illustrations... a future classic.’ Caroline Sanderson, The Bookseller
Neil Gower has worked as a freelance graphic artist for over 30 years. He is best known for his book cover designs, notably Faber’s William Golding titles and, most recently, Bill Bryson’s entire backlist. He has completed private painting commissions for patrons including Sir Roy Strong and Raymond Blanc.
Neil’s celebrated endpaper maps have embellished the work of authors as diverse as Jilly Cooper, Joanne Harris, Kazuo Ishiguro, Jo Nesbo, Vita Sackville-West and C J Sansom. He worked with designer Anya Hindmarch to create a collection of illustrated map tote bags and was recently commissioned to draw the map of the newly opened Emily Estate in Somerset.
Neither designer nor illustrator, he has carved out a creative niche where the two disciplines merge. He draws and paints by hand in a variety of styles and media, almost always combining word and image. Neil lives in Lewes at the heart of the South Downs and runs on chalk.
Neil has contributed work to Editions Four and Five of Elementum Journal, bringing his unique visual interpretation to both fictional retellings and non-fictional essays.
As Kingfishers Catch Fire will run from Saturday 21st September to Saturday 12th October 2019.
